Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

Rats are typically 18-29 cm long rodents (with their tail adding another 13-22 cm) that appear wherever humans are present. They primarily feed on waste found in human settlements, but also consume plant-based and animal food sources. During colder months, brown rats can be observed climbing bird feeders to access the birdseed placed there.

In Europe, brown rats are primarily considered storage and hygienic pests. If brown rats gain access to a building, they can cause significant damage, for example, by gnawing on cables. Furthermore, they cause extensive contamination with droppings and urine.
